Students Journalists Censored
There is a myth, it is not a new one, that teachers are perfect and should have the ability to controls the minds of students. This is seems to be a low view of the intelligence of students. Years ago, 11 to be specific some high school journalists decided to investigate the district administrators, they wanted to know how they spend the money the taxpayers were trusting them with for the schools. Well, they found some troubling excesses of spending.
It never made it to press
That’s right, the word got out as to what these enterprising student’s were up to and the administrators canned the report exposing them. Big surprise, that’s what school principles are for, right? Freedom of Speech? Nope, that is not a right that you can use to question educators. Well, the students ended up create a firestorm of legal debate that involve the courts, the legislature, and the Governor. Then others states started debating the issue. story
At Modesto Junior College
When Students for Academic Freedom appears on campus, is it embraced by the instructors? Not all. Apparently, since it protects conservative as well as liberal students it is to be scorned and impugned. While instructors have enjoyed academic freedom since the 1940’s, some think it is a right reserved for the “educated.” Interestingly enough some of these “educated” were once engaged the free speech movement of the sixties. The irony is tangible.
Appeal to Blacklisting
SAF is a national club, it does not have a blacklist. SAF does not believe in blacklisting, but it as already been attacked with such charges. Generally, this is known as pre-judging. Shouldn’t blacklisting charges be leveled when it occurs? Of course when real blacklisting occurs to conservatives the world is silent. More here
What about Students?
When a student has their beliefs contested on campus, this can be a positive experience. They are able to engage in true Socratic discourse with an academic in a safe environment.Unless, the instructor hides behind the power of podium. Because this instructor is not open to well reasoned challenges, but only wishes to indoctrinate others. What you will find is instructors that do not a have solid education will avoid being exposed, by embracing students views with whom they have agreement, declaring suddenly that “we don’t have time,” or worse harsh grading practices.
Where can you go?
Should someone engage in the practice of indoctrination or harsh grading of dissenters the student has little recourse. As of yet no one on campus can answer the question as to what a student can do should they find themselves a victim of such actions. In this day in age, this is simply absurd.
Thats how I see it. How about you?
